"Postcards from Tora Bora chronicles Wazhmah Osman's return to Afghanistan after more than two decades in America.
With co-director Kelly Dolak, she wanders the streets of Kabul pointing out the bullet-ridden ruins of the comfortable middle-class
neighborhood that she left after the Soviet invasion in 1979. Her pilgrimage harbors another agenda, as she visits her doctor/father
who abandoned his family in order to save his country.” - Variety
At the height of the Cold War, the Osman family escapes from Afghanistan while leaving their father and almost all of their worldly
possessions behind. In the ensuing chaos, their only suitcase (filled with family photos) is stolen. Now after two decades of living in
America, she returns to her childhood home. Armed with rapidly fading memories, she recruits unlikely and reluctant guides to help
piece together her past.
On an alternately sad and humorous quest, she encounters confused cabbies, the enthusiastic former minister of the tourism bureau, a
museum director that archives land mines, and a group of angry street vendors. As Wazhmah desperately searches for any tangible
evidence of her former life, the journey leads her to many unexpected places. Amidst the rubble and destruction, she finds her
estranged father who in the aftermath of war chose his country over his family, and she finds herself at a strange intersection where
cultures clash, identities are mistaken, and the past violently collides with the present.
