O Lucky Man!

Based on an idea by Malcolm McDowell, Lindsay Anderson’s masterpiece O Lucky Man! is a surreal (and often hilarious) satire that targets capitalist society. The epic adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide follows O Lucky Man!wide-eyed innocent Mick Travis (McDowell, hot on the heels of his star-making performance in A Clockwork Orange).

Travis is a lucky man; the schoolboy revolutionary (from Anderson's 1968 film If…) is now an ambitious young coffee salesman with his foot on the first rung of the ladder of success, but it’s not going to come in the way that he expects. Armed with ambition, a driving work ethic and coffee samples he sets out on the road - only to find that desire alone is not enough to bring wealth, power and status.

The optimistic Everyman rubs elbows with rich and poor alike and soon falls in love with Patricia, a beautiful young hippie. He feels that his fortune is made when he goes to work for her father, a singularly O Lucky Man!corrupt political figure. There are lessons to be learned, and Mick Travis will discover that it may be better to be lucky – than good.

Alan Price, from The Animals, is the Greek Chorus providing an incredible score with incisive, running commentary on the action. Don’t miss this incredibly rare screening of a nearly forgotten classic.
